Angle House Community

Reading Cafe Community Event

On 7th June 2024, Angle House Foundation awarded a grant of £5,000 to help open the Reading Café at Crowland Primary School in Haringey. The Reading Café was established to cultivate, inspire, and ultimately build the confidence of reading and understanding the importance of the English language for the children at Crowland Primary School.

The selection of books was carefully curated by Steven from Pickled Peppered Books in Crouch End. The books were all from leading children’s authors, including Lauren Child, Michael Rosen, Axel Scheffler, Benjamin Zephaniah, and many more. The grant also enabled the Reading Café to be furnished with a reading area that included tables, chairs, and bean bags, encouraging the children to take part in reading in a conducive environment that would aid them in escaping into the world of the books they read.

The children were so proud of this new addition to their school that they decided to volunteer over lunchtime to be the café ambassadors and librarians, helping to manage the books for the whole school.

The ceremony was attended by parents of the children, school governors, and school heads, including Gina Demetri, who was the lead on this project. Councillor Ann Graham, of Children Services for Enfield & Haringey, was in attendance to officially open the Reading Café for the school.

The children dedicated the following poem to the opening of the Café:

In Crowlands Heart, where young minds thrive,
A haven blooms where stories arrive.
A Reading Café, warm and inviting, where imagination takes flight igniting.
Lunchtime whispers, after school delight, pages turning, minds taking flight.
Crowland Primary, a place to be where words dance and hearts are free.
Parents and children, hand in hand, exploring worlds in a far-off land.
With hot drinks warming biscuits sweet, in cosy corners, they find their seat.
Tales of dragons, knights and kings or whimsical adventures with fairy wings.
Together they journey through pages turned, In the reading Café, lessons learned.
With every story, a bond is weaved. In the quiet moments, dreams conceived.
At Crowlands heart this Café divine, where love for reading will forever shine.
So, let’s raise a cup, to this magical place. Where joy and wonder interlace.
In Crowland Primary’s Reading Café, where memories are made day by day.
