What To Expect From Your First Periodontal Consultation
Who will conduct the consultation?
The periodontal consultation will be carried out by a Specialist Periodontist.Â
This is a qualified dentist who has completed further studies in the form of a clinical Master’s programme and now specialises in treating problems relating to the gums.
What will it involve?
The periodontal consultation is the first appointment. A detailed history is taken, and this includes questions about your health, dental history, oral hygiene practices, and smoking history.
Following this, a thorough clinical examination is performed to assess the health of your hard and soft tissues. Various measurements of the gums will be carried out and if required, x-rays will also be taken. Photographs may be taken for baseline records and treatment planning.
Following examination, the findings and management options will be discussed. Oral hygiene education will be provided and there will be ample opportunity to ask questions. A letter summarising the consultation will be sent to both you and the referring clinician.
Following this, you will be asked to contact the practice if you wish to proceed with the recommended management plan.Â
Tips to prepare for your consultation:

2. Be honest about your oral hygiene practices and habits like smoking.
